Hastings House

San Juan La Laguna, Solola, Guatemala

- 36 sq. m (387 sq. f) internal area - Bedroom - Kitchen / Lounge - Dry Composting Toilet - Hot Water Shower - Tire Walls - Glass Bottle Domed Roofs -

The Hastings House is a small two room house for a private client.  A slightly difficult site which was both sloped and rock-filled, the house sits in below the access road and looks out toward the beautiful Lake Atitlan.  Constructed from tires and glass bottle domed roofs, the house is comfortable and always maintains a constant temperature internally even in the hot and humid lake environment.  With careful excavation, some of the large rocks found on site were integrated into the tire walls, and now form part of the structure and adorn the building like natural artworks.  On one side of the house is a spacious bedroom, and the other is a kitchen / living area, complete with hand-built open fireplace.  Natural light permeates through the South facing windows, and both spaces are lit up by the some 600 glass bottle bricks used in the roof.

The project took around 6 months for construction and was completed in November 2015.
