Satakna School

In 2014 a non-profit organization, Miracles in Action, approached Los Técnicos to construct some tire retaining walls at the Satakna School in Santa Eulalia, to protect and reinforce the property.  A two stage project, once the retaining walls were completed and the land reinforced, the school also required a new classroom space to accommodate a larger student intake.

Stage One:  In September 2014, two representatives of Los Técnicos visited the Satakna school, assessed the site, and reported that the existing retaining walls of earth-bags were severely degraded and insufficient to retain the property.  A proposal was developed to demolish the earth-bag walls, and with the help of the Satakna community, rebuild the walls out of tires.  The community began collecting tires in January 2015, and in April 2015 construction works for the upper retaining walls and side walls commenced.  The construction of these walls took 6 weeks, in which time Los Tecnicos, the school, and the community, built two primary walls and two secondary (joining) walls out of truck and car tires.  With the completion of this, we continued on with the lower walls, employing the same methods to reinforce the other side of the school property.  This stage of works was finished in early June 2015.  These retaining walls of tires have protected the school property and buildings from damage in the future, and also stabilized a larger area of the school for the proposed buildings.
Construction Time: 9.5 weeks
Tires Used: 1,662 truck and car tires

Stage One Total Cost: US$ 15,913.25

Stage Two: the school property and buildings from damage in the future, and also stabilized a larger area of the school for the proposed buildings.
Construction Time: still in progress
Stage Two Total Cost: US$ 26,000

Total Cost of Project: US$ 41,913.25
